F.A.Q. Frequently asked questions
GSI tryouts are designed to evaluate each athlete’s current skill level, volleyball IQ, athletic ability, coachability, communication, effort, and potential fit within our team structure.
Athletes may be evaluated through serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, defense, movement, game-like drills, and competitive play.
GSI offers three tryout opportunities for the 2026–2027 club season across our Venice and Naples campuses:
Elite / Open-Level Tryouts
July 8–9 | Venice Campus
For athletes who want to be considered for GSI’s highest-level teams and Open-level pathways.
Naples Club Tryouts
July 11–12 | Naples Campus
For athletes in the Naples area looking to join GSI’s competitive club program.
Venice Club Tryouts
July 18–19 | Venice Campus
For athletes interested in joining GSI’s club program at our main Venice training facility.
If your athlete cannot attend their specific tryout date, they may attend another GSI tryout opportunity.
We recommend contacting our team in advance so we can help place your athlete in the correct evaluation group.
Yes. Athletes may attend more than one tryout if they would like additional evaluation time or if they are being considered for a higher-level team.
This can help coaches better understand an athlete’s consistency, effort, attitude, and team fit.
Yes. We strongly recommend attending GSI clinics, open gyms, private lessons, or pre-evaluation clinics before tryouts.
This gives athletes a chance to get comfortable with our coaching style and training environment. It also gives our coaches more time to get to know the athlete before formal tryouts.
Pre-evaluation clinics are training sessions held before tryouts where athletes can work with GSI coaches in a more instructional environment.
These clinics allow coaches to evaluate athletes over time, not just during one tryout session. They also help athletes understand the level, pace, and expectations of GSI Volleyball.
No. Attending clinics or pre-evaluation sessions does not guarantee a roster spot.
However, it can help coaches better evaluate the athlete’s skill level, attitude, coachability, and potential fit within the program.
GSI coaches evaluate more than just volleyball skills. We look at:
Technical skill, Athletic ability, Volleyball IQ, Serve and receive ability, Passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and defense, Movement and court awareness, Communication, Coachability, Effort and attitude, Competitive mindset, Team fit, Potential for growth
We are looking for athletes who want to work, compete, and be coached.
No. GSI offers multiple team pathways, including developmental, regional, national, and Open-level options.
Athletes do not need to be advanced to attend tryouts, but they should be ready to learn, work hard, and grow in a structured training environment.
New athletes are welcome, especially younger athletes ages 8–12.
Starting fresh can be a major advantage because our coaches can teach proper technique, movement, confidence, and volleyball habits from the beginning. GSI has a strong developmental coaching staff for athletes who are newer to the sport and ready to learn the right way.
We recommend newer athletes attend clinics, beginner programs, private lessons, camps, or pre-evaluation sessions before tryouts so coaches can get to know them and help place them on the right pathway.
Elite / Open-Level Tryouts are for athletes who want to be considered for GSI’s highest-level teams and Open-level pathways.
Regular club tryouts are for athletes across a wider range of levels, including developmental, regional, national, and advanced players.
If your athlete is unsure which tryout is best, our team can help guide you.
Yes, if they have strong volleyball experience and are ready for a higher-level evaluation environment.
Elite / Open-Level Tryouts are best for athletes who are already competing at a strong club level or who want to be considered for advanced team placement.
Team placement depends on registration numbers, athlete level, positional needs, coaching availability, and roster structure.
GSI works to create strong, balanced teams where athletes can grow and contribute. Not every athlete is guaranteed a roster spot, but we do our best to guide families toward the right GSI pathway when possible.
Teams are selected based on skill level, position, athletic ability, coachability, competitive readiness, attitude, team needs, and projected development.
For higher-level teams, coaches also evaluate whether an athlete is prepared for the speed, intensity, travel, and commitment required for that level.
Team offers are typically made within 24 hours after tryouts, depending on the age group, level, roster needs, and evaluation process.
If your athlete receives a team offer, your family will receive a welcome email from GSI with next steps, acceptance instructions, deadlines, and season information.
Roster spots are limited. If your athlete receives an offer, families should respond by the deadline provided by GSI.
This allows the club to finalize teams, coaching assignments, tournament plans, and season preparation.
Each registered athlete will receive a numbered tryout bib with pins and a GSI tryout T-shirt at check-in.
Athletes should wear the tryout shirt during evaluation so coaches can easily identify them throughout the session.
Athletes should bring volleyball shoes, knee pads, water bottle, athletic clothing, and any required registration confirmation.
They should arrive ready to train, compete, and be evaluated.
Parents should follow the instructions provided for each tryout location.
Yes. Athletes from other clubs may register for GSI tryouts, as long as they follow all applicable club, region, and governing body rules.
GSI welcomes athletes looking for a competitive training environment, stronger development pathway, and next-level preparation.
Yes. GSI places qualified teams and athletes into high-level divisions, including Open-level competition when appropriate.
We choose challenging competition so athletes are tested by strong opponents and prepared for the next level.
Yes. GSI trains to win and competes with purpose.
At the same time, we do not define success only by medals. Success at GSI also means progress, confidence, volleyball IQ, discipline, accountability, recruiting preparation, and long-term athlete development.
Yes. GSI provides recruiting education and support for athletes who are interested in playing at the college level.
Recruiting support may include coach communication education, profile guidance, highlight video direction, tournament exposure, recruiting workshops, and preparation for college-level expectations.
Yes. Private lessons are available and can be helpful for athletes who want individual feedback before tryouts.
Private training can focus on technical correction, position-specific skills, confidence, movement, serving, passing, setting, attacking, defense, or overall preparation.
Yes. GSI accepts Step Up For Students toward eligible club dues and private lessons.
Details, eligibility, and usage instructions can be discussed directly with our team.
